FEMA Mitigation Teams Engage with More Than 10,000 Guam Residents

Although the deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance has passed, FEMA’s support for Guam residents’ recovery journey remains steadfast. The FEMA Mitigation teams have been tirelessly working with the survivors to raise awareness about potential hazards, promote preparedness measures, and to emphasize on personal and community involvement in mitigating disaster risks.

JIC Recovery Release No. 109 - 34 Debris Teams on the Ground in Guam, New Locations Scheduled to Begin Soon

With 34 debris clean-up teams on the ground, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) debris mission is moving at full-steam, conducting separation and pickup of Mawar related debris from residential properties. Three new locations (Chalan-Pago-Ordot, Mongmong-Toto-Maite and Yona) have been scheduled to begin debris pick-up soon.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) were notified by Guam Fire Dispatch of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) found along the construction site on Ypao Road in Tumon. The UXO is described to be a possible mortar round, approximately 16 inches in length and 4 inches in diameter.

Flood Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory, in effect for west central Guam until 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has already fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch is expected, resulting in minor flooding.

Continued Rental Assistance Available to Eligible Typhoon Mawar Survivors

Typhoon Mawar survivors who have already registered with FEMA and received initial rental assistance from FEMA may be eligible for continued rental assistance.

You may be eligible for assistance if you had damage or losses because of Typhoon Mawar. You may also be eligible if:

  • You were awarded initial rental assistance and used it as intended. The initial award covers two months.

JIC Recovery Release No. 107 - FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Mangilao to Close by End of Day; Help is Still Available

Guam Homeland Security Office of Civil Defense, FEMA and the Village of Mangilao, will close the Disaster Recovery Center at Guam Community College, but help is still available. The following Disaster Recovery Center at the Guam Community College will cease operations at the close of business at 5 p.m. today, Aug 16, 2023.

Disaster Recovery Centers are barrier-free and provide equal access to all visitors. If you use American Sign Language or assistive technology, and if you need accommodations to communicate, please notify FEMA staff at the center immediately.

Press Release - Earthquake Recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 that struck 271km SE of San Jose Village, Northern Mariana Islands, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 11:51 p.m., August 14, 2023 (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries for Guam reported from the earthquake.

Guam Homeland Security Office of Civil Defense, FEMA and the Village of Mangilao, will close the Disaster Recovery Center at Guam Community College, but help is still available. The following Disaster Recovery Center will cease operations at the close of business Aug 16, 2023.

Small Craft Advisory Remains in Effect through Today

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office maintains a small craft advisory in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening. Southwest winds of 15 to 20 knots, with frequent gusts to 25 knots, are expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.

Flash Flood Warning In Effect Until 7:30 pm

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flash flood warning, in effect for South Western Guam, until 7:30 pm this evening. Doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area. Between 0.2 and 0.6 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.8 to 2.6 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
