The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2, that was later downgraded to M 7.8, that occurred 24 km WSW of Burias, Philippines with a depth of 25.0 km, at 9:37 a.m. (ChST).
As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami advisory remains in effect for Guam and the CNMI. Based on available data, there is a potential threat to Guam and the CNMI. Sea level fluctuations and strong ocean currents that could be a hazard along beaches, in harbors, and in coastal waters.
What to Expect:
- Sea level fluctuations that are generally no more than 1 foot above and below the tide level.
- Strong and unusual ocean currents in harbors, bays, and other near shore waters.
- The earliest estimated time that hazardous sea level fluctuations and strong currents may begin is 12:45 p.m. (ChST), Monday, June 8, and can persist for many hours or longer.
Actions Taken:
- Stay out of the waters, away from the beaches and coastal areas.
- Stay alert for further information.
- At this time, this does not call for a full scale evacuation.
