Governor Leon Guerrero Signs Executive Order No. 2021-32

GHS/OCD, JRM, NBG, and AAFB to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), Joint Region Marianas (JRM), U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), and Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, starting at 3:15 p.m.

GHS/OCD will test the nineteen (19) All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) sirens in conjunction with JRM, NBG, and AAFB monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV)” sirens.

Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain; Inexperienced Swimmers Reminded to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised that as expected, trade-winds intensified and will continue through tonight. For the Marianas, it is expected to be breezy today, partly cloudy with isolated showers.  

The following NWS advisories remain in effect:

high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Thursday. Large breaking waves up to 10 feet are expected along north and west facing reefs.

Hazardous Surf and Seas Expected by this Evening; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a long-period northwest and a northeast trade-wind swell will increase this evening causing surf to build along all but south facing reefs.

The following NWS advisories are in effect:

high surf advisory will be in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from 6 p.m. this evening to 6 a.m. Thursday. Large breaking waves up to 10 are expected along north and west facing reefs. Surf is expected to fall Wednesday night into Thursday.

Port Authority AHAWS Siren to be Tested December 29

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) will conduct a test of the All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) siren remotely from the Port Authority of Guam (PAG) location tomorrow, December 29, 2021, beginning at 3 p.m.

The siren test from PAG is being conducted to assess operations. Residents, visitors and motorists surrounding the PAG AHAWS siren can expect to hear pre-scripted voice messaging announcing the start and end of the test, and the “Alert” tone.

High Risk of Rip Currents in Effect Through this Afternoon

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high risk of rip currents, which remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through this afternoon. Large breaking waves up to 9 feet and dangerous rip currents are expected along east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current.
