GHS/OCD Host Contests for National Preparedness Month

Throughout the month of September, Guam will join the nation in celebrating National Preparedness Month (NPM) and promoting the importance of planning and preparing for man-made and natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. This year’s NPM theme is, “A Lasting Legacy. Preparing for disasters to create a lasting legacy for you and your family.”

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) will host a poster contest through September for Guam based schools, with opportunities to win prizes at the end of the month.

GHS/OCD Promotes September as National Preparedness Month

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) invite the island to celebrate September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). To commemorate the month, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero will declare NPM with a proclamation signing on Friday, September 2, at 11:30 a.m., at the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex, Adelup.

The 2022 NPM theme is “A Lasting Legacy. The life you’ve built is worth protecting. Prepare for disasters to create a lasting legacy for you and your family.”

JIC RELEASE NO. 1118 - COVID-19 Test Results: 80 New Cases, 21 Hospitalized; Additional COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Test Results: 80 New Cases Reported

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 80 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,118 specimens collected August 22, 2022. Twenty-nine (29) of the cases reported today are through the Department of Defense. To date, there have been a total of 57,441 officially reported cases, 389 deaths, 616 cases in active isolation, and 56,436 not in active isolation.

Impassable Roadways Reported; Flood Advisory Remains in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory for Guam until 11 a.m. Due to flooding from heavy rainfall, the following roads have been reported impassable:
  • Rt. 1, Piti, near Polaris Pt., both north and southbound lanes impassable for smaller vehicles
  • Rt. 2, by the Agat residential transfer station, both north and southbound lanes impassable for smaller vehicles
  • Rt. 17, Cross Island Rd., near the GPA substation, both north and southbound lanes impassable for smaller vehicles

Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan Guam has issued a flood advisory for Guam until 11 a.m.

Heavy rainfall is occurring. Up to 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has already fallen. Additional rainfall of up to 1 to 2 inches is expected. 

Some locations that will experience flooding include Dededo, Tamuning, Yigo, Mangilao, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Barrigada, Yona, Hagatna Heights, Andersen AFB, Talofofo, Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Sinajana, Inarajan, Asan, Merizo, Piti, Santa Rita and Umatac.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

    JIC RELEASE NO. 1117 - Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 155 New Cases, 18 Hospitalized; Additional COVID-19 Updates

    Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 155 New Cases Reported

    Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 155 new cases of COVID-19 from 3,689 specimens analyzed from tests administered August 20 – 22, 2022:

    • August 22: 31 of 912 test positive for COVID-19

    • August 21: 47 of 1,182 test positive for COVID-19

    • August 20: 77 of 1,595 test positive for COVID-19

    Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Practice Caution on the Roadways

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory for Guam, in effect until 3:45 p.m. this afternoon. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches is expected, resulting in minor flooding.

    Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:
    • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;
    • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;

    Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution in Heavy Showers this Afternoon

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a thunderstorm advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport Authority until 3 p.m. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport. Seek shelter if lightning is seen or thunder is heard.  

    Heavy showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. Brief flooding is possible in poor drainage areas, streams and river basins.

    Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

      JIC RELEASE NO. 1116 - COVID-19 Test Results: 102 New Cases, 18 Hospitalized; Additional COVID-19 Updates

      COVID-19 Test Results: 102 New Cases Reported

      Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 102 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,862 specimens collected August 18, 2022. Eleven (11) of the cases reported today are through the Department of Defense. To date, there have been a total of 57,206 officially reported cases, 389 deaths, 504 cases in active isolation, and 56,313 not in active isolation.

       

      18 Hospitalized for COVID-19

      JIC RELEASE NO. 1115 - COVID-19 Test Results: 64 New Cases, 25 Hospitalized; COVID-19-related Fatalities Adjusted; Additional COVID-19 Updates

      COVID-19 Test Results: 64 New Cases Reported

      Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 64 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,306 specimens collected August 17, 2022. Eight (8) of the cases reported today are through the Department of Defense. To date, there have been a total of 57,104 officially reported cases, 389 deaths, 488 cases in active isolation, and 56,227 not in active isolation.
