Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office have the following advisories in effect:

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet is expected in the surf zone for north facing reefs. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Vanuatu Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 that occurred 23 km WNW of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, with a depth of 27.7 km, at 10:32 p.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands at this time.

This will be the final statement issued by GHS/OCD unless additional information is received.

Flash Flood Warning Now in Effect for Southwestern Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan Guam has issued a flash flood warning for Southwestern Guam until 1:45 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are producing heavy rain along and south of Cross Island Road. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. 

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Chalan Pago-Ordot, Yona, Hagatna Heights, Talofofo, Inarajan, Asan, Merizo, Piti, Santa Rita and Umatac.

Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan Guam has issued a flood advisory for Guam until 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. Urban and small stream flooding from excessive rainfall is expected.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Dededo, Tamuning, Yigo, Mangilao, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Barrigada, Yona, Hagatna Heights, Andersen AFB, Talofofo, Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Sinajana, Inarajan, Asan, Merizo, Piti, Santa Rita and Umatac.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

    Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a thunderstorm advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport until 7 p.m. this evening. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport. Be alert and take precautions as required.

    The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice caution while traveling in heavy rain, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a flood watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from through Monday afternoon. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

    Heavy showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical disturbance are expected. Rainfall amounts between 3 and 5 inches, with locally heavier amounts in excess of 8 inches, is possible through late Monday afternoon. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

    Prepare for Heavy Rainfall; Flash Flood Watch in Effect Sunday through Monday

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flash flood watch in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon. Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

    Heavy showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical disturbance are expected. Rainfall amounts between 3 and 5 inches, with locally heavier amounts in excess of 8 inches, is possible through late Monday afternoon. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

    Heavy Rainfall Possible Monday; Dangerous Rip Currents Remain through this Afternoon

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a hydrologic outlook for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Locally heavy rainfall is possible early Monday morning through Tuesday evening.

    NWS advised a slowly developing circulation will approach the Marianas from the east-southeast early next week. Periods of locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are possible. Current indications are for 3 to 6 inches of rainfall to occur but some of the higher terrain across southern Guam and Rota could see a few higher amounts.

    Wind Advisory in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

    An airport wind advisory is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 6 p.m. this evening. Winds of 15 to 20 knots, with gusts to 26 knots, are possible, especially in heavier showers. Practice caution if traveling in these conditions.  

    Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions.

    GHS/OCD Hosts Continuity Planning and Instructional Presentation Training Opportunities
