X Flooding is a temporary overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. There are many possible causes of floods including heavy rain, coastal storms and storm surge, waterway overflow from being blocked with debris, or overflow of levees, dams, or waste water systems. Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.

Typhoons/Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from typhoons/hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, and rip currents.

“Hurricanes” form in the Atlantic Northeast Pacific region and “Typhoons” form in the Northwest Pacific Region. These large storms are call cyclones in other parts of the world.

Hazardous Surf Remains for the Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS) - Guam Weather Forecast Office advise diminishing northwest swell generated by Typhoon Hagibis will prolong hazardous surf across the Mariana Islands through this afternoon.

A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening, meaning high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions. Along north and west facing reefs, hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet will linger through this morning.

Strong Rip Currents will be Life Threatening; NWS Issues High Surf Advisory for the Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS) - Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, in effect until 6 p.m. Monday. A high surf advisory means high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

Along north and west facing reefs, hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet will subside to 8 and 10 feet tonight. Surf will remain hazardous through at least Monday.

Preliminary Damage Assessments Underway After Super Typhoon Hagibis

Pursuant to the Guam Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, the Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) and other Government of Guam (GovGuam) support agencies have begun conducting an island-wide Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) following the passage of Super Typhoon Hagibis north of Saipan, which affected Guam between October 7-8, 2019.

JIC Release No. 8 - Guam in COR 4 at 10 a.m., All Clear

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Capt. Hans Sholley, Chief of Staff, Joint Region Marianas, have placed Guam and the respective military bases in Condition of Readiness (COR) 4 as of 10 a.m. COR 4 means damaging winds are no longer expected for the Marianas.

JIC Release No. 7 - Super Typhoon Hagibis Passed West of Anatahan Islands; Guam Remains in COR 2

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 and Government of Guam offices and schools remain closed at this time as Super Typhoon Hagibis continues to pass through the Mariana Islands. Residents and visitors are advised to remain indoors and off the roads at this time.

JIC Release No. 6 - Hagibis Continues Toward Anatahan Island; Community Advised to Remain Indoors

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Super Typhoon Hagibis. As of 10:56 p.m., Hagibis was located 16.1 degrees north latitude and 146.7 degrees east longitude, approximately 95 miles northeast of Saipan and 220 miles northeast of Guam. Super Typhoon Hagibis is moving west-northwest at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. The public is advised to stay indoors throughout the duration of the storm.

JIC Release No. 5 - Hospital/Clinic Update

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 as of 6:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors until COR 4 is declared. As Super Typhoon Hagibis approaches the Marianas, the Mayors’ Council of Guam has announced that Senior Centers and Adult Day Care centers will be closed on Tuesday. JIC Release No. 4 - Shelter and Transportation Update

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 as of 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2019, and three Guam Department of Education emergency shelters are open. Mayor’s Offices will remain open throughout the night to provide bus transportation to shelters for residents in need.

The Government of Guam will be closed on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, as Super Typhoon Hagibis continues toward the Marianas. The Government of Guam, Guam Department of Education schools, Guam Community College, and University of Guam will remain closed until Condition of Readiness (COR) 4 is announced. DODEA and Catholic schools will also be closed on Tuesday.
