JIC RELEASE NO. 833 - Three COVID-19-Related Fatalities Reported; COVID-19 Updates: 152 New Cases, 51 Hospitalized; DPHSS Job Fair Saturday, October 30; Food Commodities Distribution Continues

Three COVID-19-Related Fatalities Reported
The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified of three (3) COVID-19-related fatalities:

GHS/OCD, JRM, NBG, and AAFB to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), Joint Region Marianas (JRM), U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), and Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, starting at 3:15 p.m.


GHS/OCD will test the nineteen (19) All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) sirens in conjunction with JRM, NBG, and AAFB monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV)” sirens.
 

Strong Thunderstorm Over Southern Guam Waters; Boaters Advised to Seek Safe Harbor

The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam issued a marine weather statement for Guam. A strong thunderstorm is over the waters of southern Guam. The thunderstorm is capable of producing winds to around 35 knots. It is located near Cocos Island, 12 nautical miles south of Agat, moving north at 25 knots. Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until the storm passes.

Flood Watch Remains in Effect through this Afternoon; Practice Caution While Driving

The following National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advisories remain in effect:

flash flood watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, through this afternoon. A circulation passing west of Guam will bring periods of heavy showers this afternoon. Brief heavy showers and thunderstorms this afternoon may cause periods of flooding. The flash flood watch will no longer be in effect tonight, when flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.

Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan Guam has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for Guam until 9:30 p.m.

Heavy rain is falling across southern Guam. Heavy showers may spread to central and northern Guam. Up to an inch of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of one to two inches are expected over the area. This rain will results in minor flooding. 

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

Small Craft Advisory in Effect at Midnight Tonight through Monday Morning

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam issued a small craft advisory, in effect for Guam from midnight tonight to 6 a.m. Monday. 

South winds of 10 to 20 kt, building to between 20 and 25 kt, are expected Sunday morning. Occasional gusts of 30 kt and choppy seas between 5 and 8 feet are also expected for the coastal waters of the Marianas. The largest seas are likely near Guam. Reduced visibility is likely at times due to waves of heavy showers.

JIC RELEASE NO. 830 - Moderna and Johnson and Johnson/Janssen; COVID-19 Booster Shots Now Available; COVID-19 Updates: 36 New Cases, 54 Hospitalized

Effective immediately, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 booster shots are available on Guam to those who meet the eligibility criteria. This follows U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. 

For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (first two doses), the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series:

227th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported
The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified that Guam’s 227th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on October 22, 2021. The patient was a 77-year-old female, unvaccinated, with underlying health conditions. She tested positive on October 16.
