The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified of three (3) COVID-19-related fatalities.

Community Invited to Participate in World Tsunami Awareness Day 2021

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), following a worldwide initiative through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), invite the community to celebrate “World Tsunami Awareness Day” (WTAD) on Friday, November 5, 2021, to promote a global culture of tsunami awareness. Tsunamis are rare but can affect many people, especially those living in coastal communities across multiple countries.


High Surf Advisory in Effect Until Tuesday Morning; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office extended the high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, now in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected tonight along north facing reefs, resulting in a high risk of rip currents.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory, in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, until 6 p.m. Monday. Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet tonight and 7 to 9 feet Monday are expected along north and west facing reefs. There is also a high risk of rip currents.

Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion is expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

Three COVID-19-Related Fatalities Reported
The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified of three (3) COVID-19-related fatalities:

  • The 233rd COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on October 24, 2021. The patient was an 89-year-old female, vaccinated, with underlying health conditions. She tested positive on October 24.
