High Risk of Rip Currents in Effect

 

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high risk of rip currents in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Wednesday afternoon along east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.  

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Indonesia Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 that occurred 96 km N of Tuban, Indonesia at 7:55 p.m. (ChST), with a depth of 594.0 km.

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas at this time. 

This will be the only statement issued unless additional information is received.

Locally Heavy Rainfall Possible; Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor a tropical disturbance, Invest 90W, as it drifts around western Micronesia. The disturbance is expected to pass near Yap and Palau over the weekend.

Although there is no direct impact expected for the Marianas from the disturbance, it is expected to push a surface trough and shear line northwestward over the next few days, resulting in locally heavy rainfall for the Marianas. A drier pattern is expected to move into the region Sunday night or early next week.

At 2:35 p.m., Guam Fire Department (GFD) officials confirmed that the truck and LP tank were safely and successfully removed from the ravine by a private contractor using an excavator. 

The Guam Police Department and Department of Revenue & Taxation Motor Carrier Division will continue their investigation into the cause of the crash. 

As of 3:11 p.m., both southbound and northbound lanes of travel on Rt. 2 into Humåtak have been cleared and are open. 

This will be the final statement issued by the Joint Information Center on the incident.

UPDATE: Response to LP Gas Tanker Crash; Roadways Remain Closed 

 At 5:15 a.m, Guam Fire Department (GFD) personnel reported the LP gas tank was completely empty of its contents and flammability and oxygen levels were deemed safe for entry. Extrication of the victim will be performed once the Guam Police Department (GPD) completes their initial investigation into the crash.

As of 9:15 p.m, the LP gas tanker that crashed on Rt. 2 into Humåtak, continues to emit and release its contents. According to the Guam Fire Department (GFD), the driver and sole occupant of the truck was initially assessed; however, due to fatal injuries sustained in the crash, emergency health care was withheld.

Situation Update
At 9:14 a.m., the Guam Fire Department (GFD) was notified of a single-vehicle crash that occurred when a LP gas tanker truck veered off of Rt. 2 into a ravine near George S. Sanchez Ct. and the San Dionisio Church, Humåtak. As a result of the impact, the tank, holding approximately 1,300 lbs. of LP Gas, separated from the truck chassis and was breached. Firefighters and first responders are on scene and monitoring the release of the contents.

Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due dangerous surf conditions.

A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam and Rota until 6 p.m. Friday along north and west facing reefs. Large surf of 7 to 9 feet today, building to 10 to 12 feet tonight, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a large north swell will generate hazardous surf on north and west facing reefs through Friday.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam and Rota until 6 p.m. Friday. Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet are expected along north and west facing reefs. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.
