X Flooding is a temporary overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. There are many possible causes of floods including heavy rain, coastal storms and storm surge, waterway overflow from being blocked with debris, or overflow of levees, dams, or waste water systems. Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.

Typhoons/Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from typhoons/hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, and rip currents.

“Hurricanes” form in the Atlantic Northeast Pacific region and “Typhoons” form in the Northwest Pacific Region. These large storms are call cyclones in other parts of the world.

JIC Release No. 29 - Boil Water Notice; Water Conservation

Guam is in COR 1 - Remain indoors

The Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) is advising customers to conserve water and has issued a boil water notice due to possible bacterial contamination in the water that can occur when increased run-off enters a drinking water source following heavy rains. GWA will perform assessments of its water system to be within acceptable levels as soon as possible.

JIC Release No. 27 - Guam Remains in COR 1; Governor Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Tenorio to Make Initial Assessment at First Light

At first light, and when it is safe to do so, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio, along with partners from the Department of Public Works, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will conduct a windshield assessment to gain visibility of any major damages or blocked roadways in the wake of Typhoon Mawar. As Guam received the full brunt of the typhoon overnight, the assessment will help determine what damages may have occurred.

JIC Release No. 26 - Typhoon Mawar Moving Away; Tropical Storm Force Conditions Still Expected

Guam is in COR 1 - Remain indoors

As of 12 a.m., May 25, typhoon force winds from Typhoon Mawar are expected to slowly subside for Guam as the center of the storm slowly pulls away from Guam. However, the island can still expect strong battering tropical storm force winds to continue through this morning. Expect heavy showers and strong gusty winds.

The worst of the conditions will lighten, slowly ending the heavy thrashing of Guam in the next couple of hours.

JIC Release No. 25 - Extreme Wind Warning Extended; Destructive Winds Expected to Continue Late into this Evening

Guam is in COR 1 - Remain indoors

The Extreme Wind Warning has been extended for the northeastern part of Guam until 10:45 p.m. Widespread destructive winds of 115 to 140 mph are moving over Yigo and Andersen AFB, extending southward to Dededo. The safest place to be is in a reinforced concrete structure, in an interior room.

JIC Release No. 24 - Extreme Wind Warning in Effect; Typhoon Mawar Impacts Guam

Guam is in COR 1 - Remain indoors

An Extreme Wind Warning is in effect for the northeastern part of Guam until 7:45 p.m. Widespread destructive winds of 115 to 140 mph are moving over Yigo and Andersen AFB, extending southward to Dededo, as far as the Micronesia Mall. The central and southern parts of the island will continue to experience typhoon force winds but the highest wind speed will be farther north, over Andersen AFB and Ritidian.

JIC Release No. 23 - Typhoon Mawar Update: Conditions Expected to Worsen

Stay indoors until COR 4 is declared.

Conditions Worsening in the Next Few Hours:

Typhoon Mawar continues on a track toward Guam. As of 1 p.m., Mawar was located 13.2 degrees north latitude and 145.5 degrees east longitude, about 45 miles east-southeast of Guam and 135 miles south of Saipan. It has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. The storm is experiencing an eyewall replacement cycle which will affect its trajectory as it moves closer to Guam.

Stay indoors until COR 4 is declared, now that Guam is in the threshold of damaging winds of 39 mph or greater. Winds are expected to intensify to typhoon force winds by midday, with the strongest winds of 145 mph sustained winds, with gusts up to 150-170 mph expected through the afternoon.

JIC Release No. 20 - SHELTER NO LATER THAN 9 AM

The community is advised to SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER NO LATER THAN 9 a.m. at the designated Northern, Central, and Southern Emergency Shelters, if you have not done so already. Once sheltered, stay indoors until COR 4 is declared.

Those seeking shelter are advised to move immediately, no later than 9 a.m.
