High Surf Advisory in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a northwest swell, generated by strong gale-force winds behind a cold front located south of Japan, continues to affect the Marianas.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions.

A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. Thursday. Large breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet are expected along north facing reefs of the Marianas.

Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 135 New Cases Reported December 13 – 19

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 135 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,219 specimens analyzed from tests administered December 12 – 18, 2022:

  • December 19: 4 of 131 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 18: 13 of 104 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 17: 16 of 182 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 16: 26 of 195 test positive for COVID-19

No Immediate Threat to Marianas Assessed from Reported North Korea Launch

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), federal and military partners, continue to monitor events surrounding the region including reports of the recent launch of an unidentified projectile out of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today. 

Wind Advisory Remains in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

A wind advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 7 p.m. Saturday. Winds of 15 to 25 mph at times tonight are expected to build to 20 to 30 mph Friday through Saturday, with gusts up to 35 mph possible. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs could be blown down.

Winds and Seas Expected to Increase Thursday; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

A wind advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from 6 a.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Saturday. Winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 mph are expected to increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 35 mph by Friday. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs could be blown down.

High Risk of Rip Currents through this Afternoon; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through 6 p.m. this afternoon. Dangerous rip currents are expected for east facing reefs of the Marianas.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous rip currents.

Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 114 New Cases Reported December 6 – 12

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 114 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,334 specimens analyzed from tests administered December 5 – 11, 2022:

  • December 12: 2 of 142 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 11: 12 of 78 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 10: 24 of 140 test positive for COVID-19

  • December 9: 13 of 205 test positive for COVID-19

Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a thunderstorm advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport Authority until 11:30 p.m. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport.

Be alert and take precautions as required. These storms have been producing occasional lightning. If outdoors, seek shelter if lightning is seen or thunder is heard.
