JIC Release No. 5 - Guam in COR 2; School Updates; Shelter Information will be Provided Tomorrow; Guam Legislature Closed; Judicial Court Closed; GSWA Update; Healthcare Updates

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has placed Guam in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 at 8 p.m. this evening. At COR2, the Government of Guam, with the exception of essential services, will not be operational and will remain closed until COR 4 is announced. 

JIC Release No. 3 - Tropical Storm Mawar Continues Toward the Marianas; Guam to Move to COR 2 at 8 pm Tonight

Officials continue to monitor the developing system which has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Mawar. As of 7 a.m., Mawar was located 6.4 degrees north latitude and 149.1 degrees east longitude, 40 miles south of Polowat, 200 miles west-southwest of Chuuk, and 570 miles south-southeast of Guam. It is moving north-northwest at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Tropical Storm Mawar is expected to intensify through tonight, possibly becoming a typhoon. 

JIC Release No. 2 - Typhoon Watch in Effect for Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor what is now Tropical Depression 02W, formerly known as Invest 97W.

A typhoon watch is now in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. A typhoon watch means that typhoon conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. As of 1 p.m., Tropical Depression 02W was located near 5.6 degrees north latitude and 149.0 degrees east longitude. This was about 610 miles south-southeast of Guam, moving west-northwest, with 30 mph winds. 

JIC Release No. 1 - Guam in COR 3; Take Action to Prepare

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Rear Admiral Benjamin Nicholson placed Guam and the respective military bases in Condition of Readiness (COR) 3 at 1 p.m. this afternoon. At COR 3, damaging winds of 39-57 mph are expected within 48 hours. 

Joint Region Marianas, Naval Base Guam, Andersen Air Force Base, and Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz establish COR 3. All Military installations on Guam are currently securing facilities and housing residents are urged to commence heavy weather preparedness efforts in COR 3. 

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Loyalty Islands Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 that occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands at 11:51 a.m. (ChST), with a depth of 45.0 km.

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas at this time. 

This will be the only statement issued unless additional information is received.

Press Release - Disturbance Remains a Possible Threat for the Marianas; Heavy Rainfall Expected Monday through Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Invest Area 97W, which continues to organize. As of this morning, 97W was centered about 250 miles west-southwest of Chuuk Lagoon, 200 miles south-southeast of Satawal, near 5 degrees north latitude and 149 degrees east longitude. It is expected to organize over the next 12 to 36 hours, eventually turning north-northwest toward Guam.

Earthquake Recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 that struck 108 km SSW of Merizo Village, Guam, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 6:02 p.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries reported from the earthquake.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community that when an earthquake strikes, conduct the earthquake procedure, “Drop, Cover and Hold On” until the shaking stops.

Earthquake Recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 that struck 158 km SSW of Merizo Village, Guam, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 3:53 a.m. (ChST). 

There were no major damages or injuries reported from the earthquake. There is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. 

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Tonga Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 that occurred 95 km WNW of Hihifo, Tonga with a depth of 210.1 km, at 2:02 a.m. (ChST)

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands from this earthquake.  

This will be the final statement issued by GHS/OCD unless additional information is received.
