Hazardous Surf Remains, Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 4 p.m. this afternoon. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

high risk of rip currents remains in effect for north and east facing reefs of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through this afternoon. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

fire weather watch is expected to be in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan from late Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, with higher gusts over higher terrain, are expected. Any fires that develop during that time will likely spread rapidly.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid hazardous surf and dangerous rip currents, especially north and east facing reefs and beaches. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
