Flood Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory, in effect until 6 p.m. this evening. Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Between 1 and 2.2 inches of rain has fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected, resulting in minor flooding.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:

All Clear Issued for Possible IED

The All Clear was issued at 1:00 p.m. for the safe retrieval of a WWII hand grenade, resembling an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The IED has been confirmed as non-threatening and its extraction will now proceed accordingly at Ironwood Estates, Dededo.

The area resumes normal operations. All precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the public and responders involved. 

Strong Wind No Longer Expected 

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor what was formerly known as Invest 93W, since upgraded to Tropical Storm Haikui, which was originally forecast to have some effect on the Marianas along with the monsoon flow.

Debris Pick-Up to Begin in Three Additional Villages: Chalan Pago-Ordot, Mangilao, and Yona

With debris clean-up teams on the ground, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) debris mission continues with three new villages (Chalan Pago-Ordot, Mangilao, and Yona) beginning debris clean-up this week. 

GHS/OCD Promotes September as National Preparedness Month

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) invite the island to celebrate September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). To commemorate the month, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero will declare NPM with a virtual proclamation signing on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 11:30 a.m., which will also be streamed live on the Governor’s Facebook page.

The 2023 NPM theme is “Preparing for Older Adults.”

Wind Advisory in Effect through Tuesday; Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain 

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor a developing tropical system, known as Invest 93W, located northwest of Saipan. As part of the tropical system, a southwesterly monsoon flow is strengthening. Showers will continue to increase in coverage from south to north across the Marianas, with locally heavy showers and a few thunderstorms possible.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reached a milestone this week as Typhoon Mawar debris clean-up from residential rights of way (ROWs) has been finished in three villages (Humåtak, Malesso, Piti). The debris mission continues in 12 villages with the remaining localities scheduled to begin clean-up soon.

Hazardous Surf and Seas Expected through the Week 

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. next Saturday. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet today are expected to become 9 to 11 feet tonight along south and west facing reefs of the Marianas. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
