Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test Planned

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is scheduled to conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on August 7, 2019, beginning at 2:20 p.m. (EDT), which converts to Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 4:20 a.m. (ChST).

 

The EAS test will commence at 4:20 a.m. (ChST) for the continental U.S., its territories, and CNMI. The EAS is used by alerting authorities to send warnings via broadcast, cable, satellite, and wireline communication pathways.

 

GHS/OCD Promotes Earthquake Preparedness Week and Tsunami Preparedness Week

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero will declare the week of August 4-10, 2019 as Earthquake Preparedness Week (EPW) and August 11-17 as Tsunami Preparedness Week (TPW) to promote earthquake and tsunami hazard preparedness as an active collaboration among federal, territorial and local emergency management agencies, community leaders and the public. 

 

NWS Issues Short Term Forecast; Practice Caution in Heavy Showers

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a short-term forecast for Guam. Through 4:30 p.m., thunderstorms and periodic heavy showers will impact central and eastern Guam, and adjacent waters. Up to two inches of rain is possible.

Motorists are advised to be prepared for brief flooding of roads and lower visibilities under heavy downpours.

Mariners are reminded be cautious for visibilities down to half a mile and dangerous lightning. If showers persist longer than expected, a flood advisory will be issued.

GHS/OCD, NBG, and AAFB to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), and Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, August 6, starting at 3:15 p.m.

 

GHS/OCD will test the All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) from seventeen (17) locations in conjunction with NBG and AAFB monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV).”

 

NWS Advisories in Effect for the Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office issued the following advisories for the Marianas:


A short term forecast is in effect for Guam and Guam coastal waters. Through 2 p.m., heavy showers and thunderstorms will move across portions of central and southern Guam and adjacent coastal waters. Areas affected include Hagatna and Agana Heights southward to Piti and Apra Harbor and farther to Umatac and Merizo. Up to an inch and a half of rain is possible with occasional lightning strikes.
