JIC Recovery Release No. 19 - Oka Point Disaster Debris Site to Close May 1; Green Waste Sites Closure Notice

As Guam concludes the primary cleanup phase following Typhoon Sinlaku, the Government of Guam, in coordination with the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency (GEPA) announces the official closure of the primary disaster debris site at Oka Point, Tamuning (also known as Ypao Point or the Old Memorial Hospital site). 

Effective Friday, May 1, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. the Oka Point, Tamuning (also known as Ypao Point or the Old Memorial Hospital site) will permanently cease operations for storm-related debris.

Tropical Formation May Pose a Threat to Portions of the Region Next Week; Uncertainty Remains

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office is monitoring the potential for a tropical circulation to form in the next few days somewhere in eastern Micronesia. NWS Guam notes that latest model data suggests this potential circulation could pass near or south of the Marianas in the May 3-6 timeframe.

9:30 a.m. Earthquake Recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 that struck 40 km N of Yigo Village, Guam with a depth of 163.3 km, at 9:22 a.m. (ChST). 

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries reported from the earthquake.

JIC Recovery Release No. 16 - DOAG Crop Loss Compensation Program Activated; DPHSS Update; GDOE Schools Update

The Guam Department of Agriculture (DOAG) Agriculture Development Services (ADS) Division has initiated preliminary damage assessments of crop, livestock, and farm property losses sustained during Super Typhoon Sinlaku. 

These assessments are the first step toward processing compensation under Guam’s locally funded Crop Loss Compensation Program, subject to the appropriation of funds. Site visits to commercial farms are currently underway to determine the extent and variability of losses.

    Disaster Debris Site Update 

    The Government of Guam, in coordination with the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency (GEPA) continues to operate one (1) primary disaster debris site at Oka Point, Tamuning (also known as Ypao Point or the Old Memorial Hospital site). The disaster debris site is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
