As Guam residents begin to rebuild, survivors of Typhoon Mawar can get tips and advice on how to rebuild stronger and safer against storms.

FEMA mitigation specialists will be on hand at three locations in Dededo to answer questions and offer home improvement tips and proven methods to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters. This information is geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors.

If you have sustained damage or loss because of Typhoon Mawar, it is important to act quickly as the deadline to apply for federal assistance is approaching. You have only two weeks left to apply for FEMA disaster assistance; the registration deadline is July 27.

Renters in Guam Can Apply for FEMA Assistance

Renters in Guam whose dwelling sustained damage or loss from Typhoon Mawar can apply for federal disaster assistance. While renters are not eligible for FEMA financial assistance for home repair, they may still qualify for certain FEMA individual assistance programs.

FEMA disaster assistance may help renters pay for temporary housing. Initial rental assistance is for a one-month or two-month period and can be reviewed for further assistance. 

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory, in effect for southern Guam, until 3:00pm this afternoon. Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

 Some locations that will experience flooding include Inarajan, Talofofo, Agat, Asan, Merizo, Piti, Santa Rita and Umatac.

The Disaster Recovery Center located at C.L. Taitano Elementary School will close permanently on Friday, July 14 at 5 p.m. as the school will be making necessary arrangements for the upcoming new semester. The remaining Disaster Recovery Centers are still open during their regular hours.
