No Immediate Threat to Marianas Assessed from Reported North Korea Launch

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), federal and military partners, continue to monitor events surrounding the region including reports of the recent launch of an unidentified projectile out of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today. 
   

High Surf Advisory and High Risk of Rip Currents in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday. Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet are expected for north facing reefs of the Marianas. Dangerous swimming conditions and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
   

Community Invited to Participate in World Tsunami Awareness Day 2022

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), following a worldwide initiative through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), invite the community to celebrate “World Tsunami Awareness Day” (WTAD) on Saturday, November 5, 2022, to promote a global culture of tsunami awareness. Tsunamis are rare but can affect many people, especially those living in coastal communities across multiple countries.

Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a thunderstorm advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport until 6 p.m. this evening.  Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport. Be alert and take precautions as required. These storms have been producing occasional lightning.
