Press Release - High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement in Effect Sunday to Monday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement in effect for North facing reefs of Guam Sunday at 400 a.m. until 400 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet and dangerous rip currents expected. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions with localized beach erosion expected.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore and into deep water.

Surf along west facing reefs will be noticeably elevated.

The offices of Guam Homeland Security/Civil Defense remind residents:

· Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions

· Swim near a lifeguard.

· If caught in a rip current, relax and float.

· Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline.

· If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
