The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) tested 19 individuals for COVID-19 on Friday, April 24, 2020 with conclusive results. One tested positive through DPHSS and 18 tested negative for SARS-CoV-2.
One additional case was diagnosed by the Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DLS) and reported earlier today.
The DPHSS overall count also includes probable cases of COVID-19 and confirmed positive cases tested by the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, the U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Guam, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA), and the Guam National Guard (GUNG).
To date, 141 cases have been confirmed through COVID-19 testing provided, with 5 deaths and 126 recoveries. Recovery means a patient is no longer considered infectious. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research and published guidelines, a patient is classified as recovered after at least 72 hours have passed without a fever or additional respiratory issues and at least seven days have passed since symptoms first appeared. All remaining cases are in isolation.
Pilot Program for First Responders
A COVID-19 testing pilot program for Guam’s first responders began this week. Tests were conducted by members of the GUNG’s 94th Civil Support Team (94CST) at the Guard’s Readiness Center in Barrigada. Tests were run using the BioFire® COVID-19 Test, a nested multiplexed real-time RT-PCR test intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2. Seventeen samples were tested, and all 17 tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. The pilot program will resume next week.
