Avoid Hazardous Seas and Dangerous Rip Currents; NWS Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam has the following advisories in effect:

high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until Monday. Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet is expected along north facing reefs.

high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Monday. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. Dangerous and frequent rip currents are expected along north facing reefs.

Inexperienced swimmers should not enter the water. Never swim alone. If caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm and stay afloat while waiting for help. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Rip currents are life threatening.

small craft advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Monday for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots and seas of 7 to 9 feet will produce hazardous conditions to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid north facing reefs and beaches until hazardous conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs. Rip currents are life threatening.
