JIC Release No. 7 - Super Typhoon Hagibis Passed West of Anatahan Islands; Guam Remains in COR 2 - GHS OCD

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 and Government of Guam offices and schools remain closed at this time as Super Typhoon Hagibis continues to pass through the Mariana Islands. Residents and visitors are advised to remain indoors and off the roads at this time.

For the safety of the community, Guam will remain in COR 2 as emergency management officials assess major roadways for areas that may be deemed dangerous or impassable. At first light, Guam Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), Department of Public Works, Mayors’ Council of Guam, Guam Fire Department, and the Guam Police Department will conduct windshield assessments to evaluate post-storm conditions, as well as monitor the latest weather advisories, before issuing the all clear. Any change to the Condition of Readiness will be determined after 8 a.m.

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Super Typhoon Hagibis. As of 7 a.m., Hagibis was located at 16.5 degrees north latitude and 145.0 degrees east longitude, approximately 105 miles north-northwest of Saipan and 210 miles north of Guam. Super Typhoon Hagibis is moving west-northwest at 20 mph with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph.

At around 1 a.m., the eye of Hagibis passed over Anatahan Island, about 80 miles north of Saipan. Although Super Typhoon Hagibis made its closest point of approach to the islands early this morning, heavy winds and rain are still possible as the system moves away. The community is advised to stay indoors until COR 4 is announced.

A typhoon warning remains in effect for Saipan, Tinian, Alamagan, and the Pagan Islands, meaning typhoon conditions, including destructive winds of 74 mph or more, will continue through the morning.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Guam, Rota, and Agrihan islands, meaning tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or greater are expected through this morning.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.

Typhoons/Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from typhoons/hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, and rip currents.

“Hurricanes” form in the Atlantic Northeast Pacific region and “Typhoons” form in the Northwest Pacific Region. These large storms are call cyclones in other parts of the world.
