Suspected Cases Negative for Dengue Virus; Mosquito Surveillance Continues

The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported negative findings for the two additional suspected cases of the dengue virus. To date, there remain only two locally acquired cases. Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease and not spread from person-to-person.

“We remain on high alert, and we want the community to know if they experience symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately. Only your doctor can tell you if you need to get tested,” said DPHSS Director Linda Unpingco-Denorcey. “We urge residents to clean around their homes and yards, so there are no breeding sites for mosquitoes. With all our partners, we will continue our aggressive efforts to mitigate the spread of the dengue virus further on Guam.”

Mosquito Control and Outreach Efforts Continue
Outreach and education efforts continue in the Mangilao area to inform residents within the 200-meter radius of the first locally acquired case (confirmed on September 11). Spraying of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved insecticides were also effectuated with homeowners’ permission.

In Dededo, DPHSS continues working with partners to assess homes within a 200-meter radius of the second locally acquired case (confirmed on September 17). Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares and her staff, with the assistance of the Chamorro Land Trust Commission, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Agriculture made significant progress today clearing tires, old appliances, trash and other waste to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
