The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continue to monitor a monsoon trough as it continues to lift northward. The following advisories remain in effect for the Marianas:
A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until Saturday afternoon, meaning high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions. Hazardous surf will continue to build overnight along south and west facing reefs.
A high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Saturday afternoon. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. Dangerous rip currents are expected along south and west facing reefs through Saturday. If caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm and stay afloat while waiting for help. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Rip currents will be life threatening.
A small craft advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan coastal waters until 6 p.m. Friday. Winds between 20 and 25 knots and combined seas between 8 and 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid hazardous seas, especially south and west facing reefs and beaches, until conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
