NWS Advisories in Effect for the Marianas; Hazardous Surf Remains

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office advise a large monsoon swell moves towards the Marianas. The following advisories are in effect:

high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Tuesday night, meaning high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions. Waves will build today and surf could reach hazardous heights tonight along south and west facing reefs.

Avoid venturing out along south and west facing reefs and beaches. Large breaking waves can knock people down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening.

A small craft advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan coastal waters through Tuesday night, meaning wind speeds are expected to produce wave conditions hazardous to small craft. Southwest winds 14 to 19 mph will increase to 19 to 24 mph this evening. Seas of 5 to 6 feet will build to 8 to 11 feet tonight.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels should avoid sailing in these conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid south and west facing reefs and beaches until hazardous conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
