Circulation Poses No Direct Threat to the Marianas; NWS Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continue to monitor an area of disturbed weather, referred to as Invest 95W, with scattered to numerous showers that moved over western Chuuk State. The circulation is expected to move over eastern Yap State by today. Showers are also expected to move to the Republic of Palau on Saturday and continue through Sunday.

For the Marianas, the main effects of 95W include a short increase in winds and seas and a few more showers today as 95W moves well west-southwest. The following advisories are in effect:

A small craft advisory is in effect for coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Saturday. East winds of 20 to 25 knots and combined seas building to 8 to 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.

A high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Saturday night. Surf of 7 to 9 feet will produce a high risk of rip currents along east facing shores. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. If caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm and stay afloat while waiting for help. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Rip currents will be life threatening.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid hazardous seas until these conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
