NWS Advisories in Effect; Strong Rip Currents will be Life-Threatening

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect for the Marianas:

high surf advisory and high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Friday night. Along east facing reefs, surf will be hazardous at 8 to 11 feet today. Along south facing reefs, surf will be hazardous at 7 to 9 feet. Avoid venturing near reefs and beaches, especially those facing east and south. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not try to swim directly against a rip current.

small craft advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan coastal waters until noon. Southeast winds of 10 to 20 knots are expected and combined seas of 8 to 12 feet will subside to below 10 feet around noon. Inexperienced marines, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind residents and visitors to avoid the hazardous seas until dangerous conditions subside.
