Practice Caution on the Roadways this Afternoon; NWS Monitor a System Southeast of Guam

The National Weather Service (NWS) – Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a short term forecast for Guam and Guam coastal waters.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are moving eastward from the western Guam coastal waters across most of Guam. Locally heavy rain and occasional lightning will continue through the early afternoon. One to three inches of rainfall are likely in the heavy showers, causing flooding of roads and poor-drainage areas. If driving, be alert for low visibilities and water covering the road. Boaters should be prepared for near-zero visibilities, especially west of Guam. Seek shelter below decks if lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

A thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Guam International Airport Authority until 1 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are occurring within 5 nautical miles of the airport.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice caution if traveling in the rainy conditions, allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.

NWS is monitoring a circulation southeast of Guam, drifting south of Pohnpei. It is expected to eventually head west north-west or northwest. It is still unclear when it will move west-northwest or northwest through Chuuk State and toward the Marianas, possibly coming near the Marianas as early as this weekend. It is also unknown at this time how strong it will be or the exact location in the Marianas it is expected. There is still much uncertainty about the system.
