JIC Recovery Release No. 10 - GDOE Announces Phased Reopening of Schools; Grab-and-Go Meals and Athletics Resumption

The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) completed post-typhoon facility assessments following Typhoon Sinlaku. While the majority of campuses have been cleared for health and safety, a phased reopening will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21, 2026.


Schools Cleared for Reopening
The following schools have met all safety, power, and water requirements and will resume normal operations on Tuesday, April 21:
  • Elementary Schools: Adacao, Agana Heights, B.P. Carbullido, Capt. H.B. Price, C.L. Taitano, Harry S. Truman, Inalahan, Machananao, Marcial Sablan, P.C. Lujan, Talofofo, Tamuning, Astumbo, Daniel L. Perez (except Head Start), Finegayan, Maria A. Ulloa, and Upi.
  • Middle Schools: Agueda I. Johnston, Astumbo, Jose L.G. Rios, Luis P. Untalan, and Oceanview.
  • High Schools: John F. Kennedy, Simon Sanchez, Southern, and Tiyan.
  • Special Programs: Joaquin P. Torres Success Academy.


Schools Remaining Closed; Instructional Support Provided
The following campuses remain closed until further notice due to ongoing utility restoration (power/water) or required sanitation:
  • Elementary Schools: Ordot-Chalan Pago, Merizo Martyrs, D.L. Perez (Head Start ONLY), Wettengel, J.Q. San Miguel, J.M. Guerrero, M.U. Lujan, and Liguan.
  • Middle Schools: F.B. Leon Guerrero, Inalahan Middle, and V.S.A. Benavente.
  • High Schools: George Washington and Okkodo.

Continued Learning: Students at closed sites will be provided with learning packets or instruction via Google Classroom/Schoology.


Grab-and-Go Meal Service
To support families during the recovery, Grab-and-Go meals will be available for students enrolled at the closed schools listed above.
  • Who: All students (including Head Start) enrolled at closed campuses.
  • Where: Meals must be picked up at the student’s home school.
  • When: Daily from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Requirements: Parents/guardians must sign for receipt; staff will verify enrollment via rosters.
  • Safety: Meals are pre-packaged and should be consumed within the same day.


Resumption of Interscholastic Sports
The GDOE Deputy Superintendent has cleared Middle and High School Interscholastic Sports Association (ISA) games and practices to resume, provided that specific facility inspections are complete. Athletic coordinators must confirm with facility management that all playing surfaces and equipment are sanitized and safe prior to use.
