11:05 a.m. Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory, in effect for Guam until noon today. Between a half and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches are expected. The community is advised to take the following precautionary actions:.

  •  If driving, be alert for low visibilities in heavy rain;
  •  Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
  • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams and rivers. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.

high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 4 a.m. Tuesday. Large breaking waves of 9 to 12 feet are expected for north and east facing reefs of the Marianas. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late tonight. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Seas of 8 to 10 feet are expected. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

The Office of Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense (OHS-OCD) remind the community to practice caution while traveling in heavy rain, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
