Showers and Gusty Winds Possible Sunday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a special weather statement for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Showers and gusty winds could impact Guam and the Northern Marianas Sunday as a nearby tropical disturbance pushes through the region.

The NWS is monitoring a weak tropical disturbance, Invest 93W, located near 10.8 degrees north latitude and 153.6 degrees east longitude, which is about 620 nautical miles east-southeast of Guam, and 260 nautical miles north-northeast of Weno, Chuuk. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has rated 93W as "sub-low" for development, meaning that development is not expected to occur through the next 24 hours.

Invest 93W is expected to track west-northwest towards Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Currently, it is moving west at around 22 mph.

What to Expect

Expect a mix of sun and showers on Liberation Day as Invest 93W treks through the region. Scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected. Brief, locally heavy showers and wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible through the day.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured and loose objects. Heavy showers could cause flooding in low lying areas and ponding of water on roadways. Ensure tents, tarps and canopies are well-secured should heavy showers and strong gusts occur.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice caution while traveling in heavy rain, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
