Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain Over the Weekend; Outdoor Burning Not Recommended

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Monday along west, north and east facing reefs. Large breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet are expected in the surf zone. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions.

high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late Sunday night. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Monday. East winds of 20 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, and seas of 9 to 14 feet are expected. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

red flag warning remains in effect for Guam until 6 p.m. Monday for low humidity and high wind. Gusty winds and dry conditions could lead to rapid fire spread. Humidity as low as 50 percent in the afternoons, are expected. The highest threat is for southern parts of Guam, especially higher terrain and windward slopes, facing north or east, during daytime hours. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to remain out of the water while the advisories are in effect.
