The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a wind advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport until 6 p.m. this evening. Winds of 15 to 20 knots are expected, with gusts to 30 knots, especially near showers.
A circulation, Invest 95W, is located well south of Guam within a monsoon-like trough and is expected to move closer to Palau and Yap by Tuesday night. Elevated winds across the Marianas are expected through the remainder of the week, with a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday through Friday night. Another system, Invest 96W, is located near Namorik in the Marshall Islands but remains unorganized.
A high risk of rip currents is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Monday afternoon for east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.
A small craft advisory is in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening. East winds of 15 to 20 knots, with gusts to 25 knots, are expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice caution on the roadways, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
