The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), following a worldwide initiative through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), invite the community to celebrate “World Tsunami Awareness Day” (WTAD) on Sunday, November 5, 2023, to promote a global culture of tsunami awareness.
“Tsunamis are rare events but can affect many people, especially those living in coastal communities,” said Charles Esteves, Office of Civil Defense Administrator. “Early warning and action are effective tools to protect ourselves, save lives, and prevent a hazard from becoming a disaster.”
On Sunday, November 5, 2023, GHS/OCD encourages the community to be part of the global initiative. Use World Tsunami Awareness Day to have discussions with family and friends about how to prepare for a tsunami and recognize Tsunami Evacuation Route signs and Safe Assembly Area signs in your area. The UNDRR “Get To High Ground” initiative encourages and supports raising community awareness of tsunami risk by organizing a drill of their tsunami evacuation route to get to high ground. Document your WTAD activities using the following hashtags on social media: #TsunamiDay and #GetToHighGround.
