Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test Planned

Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test Planned

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is scheduled to conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on October 4, 2023 beginning at 2:20 p.m. (EDT), which converts to Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 4:20 a.m. (ChST).

The WEA test will commence at 2:20 p.m. (EDT) for the continental U.S. only. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Guam and the CNMI do not have U.S. based cellular carriers that participate in WEA and will not receive the WEA notification through mobile.

The EAS test will commence at 4:20 a.m. (ChST) for the continental U.S., its territories, and CNMI. The EAS is used by alerting authorities to send warnings via broadcast, cable, satellite, and wireline communication pathways. Guam and the CNMI will receive the EAS message via television and radio.

The EAS test described is not connected to an actual emergency. The All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) local sirens will not be tested on October 5; only the EAS.
