Super Typhoon Mawar continues its approach to Guam. As of 4:00 a.m., Super Typhoon Mawar was located 12.5 degrees north latitude and 145.6 degrees east longitude, about 85 miles southeast of Guam and 180 miles south of Saipan. It is moving west-northwest at 5 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.

What to Expect:

Super Typhoon Mawar’s passage very near or directly over Guam is imminent. Mawar is expected to strengthen further to a Category 5 typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, with gusts approaching 200 mph. This is expected to occur prior to making landfall.

The triple threat of torrential rains that may result in landslides and flash flooding, catastrophic wind, and life-threatening storm surge, are expected for Guam, with potentially catastrophic coastal flooding for southeastern and southern portions of Guam. Governor Lou Leon Guerrero issued Executive Order No. 2023-03 yesterday, relative to the mandatory evacuation of low-lying coastal areas of Guam.

Typhoon conditions, with winds of 74 mph or greater, are likely to begin during the next few hours and increase through the morning. Intense eyewall winds are expected around between noon and 5:00 p.m., where maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, with gusts between 195 and 200 mph are likely.

Emergency Shelter Update:

Residents whose homes are not safe against heavy winds or rains, or those that live in low-lying, flood-prone areas are advised to move to a designated emergency shelter immediately. Emergency Shelter Numbers as of 5 a.m. Wednesday:

AsTumbo Elementary School shelter is closed due to max capacity. Residents in the area are advised to seek shelter in an alternate location.

Due to the strength of the Typhoon Mawar U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia Sector Guam Joint Rescue Sub-Center watchstanders transferred the watch to U.S. Coast Guard District 14 for monitoring and response. FM/SG watchstanders are sheltering accordingly. Anyone with search and rescue needs in Guam and the CNMI should call 911, outside Guam and the CNMI and maritime traffic should use Channel 16 or call the District 14 Command Center (24x7): 1-800-331-6176

X Flooding is a temporary overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. There are many possible causes of floods including heavy rain, coastal storms and storm surge, waterway overflow from being blocked with debris, or overflow of levees, dams, or waste water systems. Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.
