Tropical Storm Sanvu Continues Northwest; No Direct Impact Expected for the Marianas at this Time

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor newly named Tropical Storm Sanvu, formerly known as Tropical Depression 01W, as it moves northwest. As of 7 a.m., Sanvu was located 10.0 degrees north latitude and 156.0 degrees east longitude, 335 miles east-northeast of Chuuk, 775 miles east-southeast of Saipan, and 795 miles east-southeast of Guam, moving north-northwest at 7 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

Tropical Storm Sanvu is expected to make a slight turn toward the west-northwest, with a slight decrease in forward speed through Saturday. It is expected to maintain its intensity through Saturday, before weakening slightly on Sunday. The Marianas will start to see more moisture ahead of Tropical Storm Sanvu over the weekend. Sanvu is expected to slightly weaken as it passes well north of Chuuk today through Saturday as it treks northwestward.

Latest model guidance show remnants of Sanvu passing near or south of Guam as an open trough early next week. However, the community is advised to stay up to date with the latest information on Sanvu in the event the system’s intensity or forecast track change in the coming days. For Guam, it is expected to be partly cloudy with isolated showers through Sunday, before becoming partly sunny on Monday, and returning to partly cloudy on Tuesday as the system passes near or south of Guam.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to stay up to date with the latest information and be prepared to take action if warranted, for increased rain.
