Locally Heavy Rainfall Possible; Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor a tropical disturbance, Invest 90W, as it drifts around western Micronesia. The disturbance is expected to pass near Yap and Palau over the weekend.

Although there is no direct impact expected for the Marianas from the disturbance, it is expected to push a surface trough and shear line northwestward over the next few days, resulting in locally heavy rainfall for the Marianas. A drier pattern is expected to move into the region Sunday night or early next week.

The community is reminded to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. The following NWS advisories remain in effect:

A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening along north and west facing reefs. Large breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet for north facing reefs and 7 to 9 feet for east and west facing reefs, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.

A high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening along north, east, and west facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening. East winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, and seas of 9 to 12 feet are expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid hazardous seas and dangerous rip currents. Remain out of the water while the advisories are in effect. Practice caution while traveling in rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
