Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 44 New Cases Reported April 29 – May 2

From April 29 – May 2, 2022, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 44 new cases of COVID-19. Five of the cases reported today is through the Department of Defense. The 44 new cases does not include cases previously reported in JIC Release No. 1036, 1037 and 1038. The breakdown of the cumulative results is below:

May 2: four of 183 test positive for COVID-19
May 1: 19 of 286 test positive for COVID-19 (10 cases previously reported).
April 30: 26 of 669 test positive for COVID-19 (13 cases previously reported).
April 29: 24 of 532 test positive for COVID-19 (six cases previously reported).

To date, there have been a total of 48,186 officially reported cases, 354 deaths, 261 cases in active isolation, and 47,571 not in active isolation.

SPECIAL NOTE: Based on today's data, if we were to compare two (2) hypothetical populations of 100,000 people each, vaccinated versus unvaccinated, there would be 2 vaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19 compared to 57 unvaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19. The risk of being hospitalized for COVID-19 is about 29 times higher for the unvaccinated as compared to the vaccinated. *Estimated population is based on DPHSS Immunization Program analysis of 2020 Census data. Updates are expected pending further Census 2020 data breakdown.

52 Cases with Variants of Concern Identified

Today, DPHSS received fifty-two (52) new results from virus samples collected on Guam between February 7 to February 18, 2022, which have undergone genome sequencing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). DPHSS received the eighth set of results from the CDC. Fifty-two of fifty-four samples were identified as the Omicron Variant of Concern (VOC). The breakdown is as follows:

To date, 746 SARS-CoV-2 virus samples have been submitted to the CDC and the Hawaii Department of Health State Lab Division for genome sequencing, with 582 samples having identified VOCs.

Second COVID-19 Booster Doses Available

Second doses of the COVID-19 booster are available to individuals ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. Eligible individuals may choose to receive a second booster dose using an mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months after the first booster dose.

Additionally, adults between the ages of 18 and 49 who are not moderately or severely immunocompromised and who received Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine as both their primary series dose and booster dose may receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months after the Janssen booster dose. Adults ages 50 years and older could benefit from a second mRNA booster dose as they are at increased risk for severe COVID-19. Adults 50 years and older may choose to receive a second booster dose, if it has been at least 4 months after the first booster dose.

Guam COVID-19 Vaccination Update

As of April 30, 2022, a total of 136,389 of Guam’s eligible population (residents 5 years and older) is fully vaccinated. This total includes 13,934 residents 12 – 17 years old. 7,943 residents 5 – 11 years old received their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech two dose series. 6,319 residents 5 – 11 years old have completed their two-dose series. A total of 58,441 eligible residents have received their first booster shots. A total of 3,161 eligible residents have received their second booster shots.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.
