The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast office continues to monitor all activity in the region. Latest models show a tropical disturbance approaching from eastern Micronesia over the weekend and moving west-northwest, possibly to reach the Marianas around Tuesday.
The tropical disturbance is expected to bring increasing showers to the region by Monday and Tuesday of next week. Models continue to differ concerning the development potential of the disturbance, with more aggressive models suggesting a tropical depression could form just west of the islands while the majority of models merely indicate a period of wet weather and gusty winds. Satellite imagery confirms the presence of showers and thunderstorms over the northern Marshall Islands associated with a westward-moving surface trough. It is this system model guidance brings into the Marianas around Tuesday. The current forecast maintains a dry and breezy weekend for the Marianas followed by increasing showers and thunderstorms later Monday and into Tuesday. Showers are expected to subside Wednesday.
With the given forecast uncertainty of the potential disturbance, the extent of specific community impacts is still undetermined. In the meantime, the community is advised to stay up to date with the latest information and prepare for rain by early next week. Those living in flood-prone areas should take action: clear drainage areas and unblock clogged storm drains in your area to minimize flooding should heavy showers develop.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in coordination with NWS, will continue to monitor all systems in the region and provide updates.
