The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a short term forecast for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, and their coastal waters.
Through 12 a.m., lines of showers and thunderstorms will pass across the Marianas and adjacent coastal waters. Be alert for occasional lightning, reduced visibilities down to 1 mile near heavier showers and thunderstorms, and minor ponding on roads. Occasional wind gusts to 25 knots are also possible near these showers, especially in the coastal waters.
A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late tonight. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected for west facing reefs.
A high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late tonight. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Large breaking waves can knock people down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents can drag people out to sea.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid hazardous seas, especially west facing reefs and beaches. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
