Tropical Storm Surigae Continues East; No Direct Threat to the Marianas

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Tropical Storm Surigae as it once again enters our area.

As of 7 a.m., Surigae was located 23.1 degrees north latitude, 130.9 degrees east longitude, about 300 miles southeast of Okinawa and 1125 miles northwest of Guam. It is moving east at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Tropical Storm Surigae has moved north just to the east of the Philippines and Taiwan this past week and has rounded a turn to the east. It is expected to continue eastward, remaining well north of the Marianas. Although there will be no direct threat to the Marianas from Surigae, swells from the storm may cause hazardous surf along west and north facing reefs. For the far Northern Marianas, increasing winds, heavy showers, and hazardous seas are expected for Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan Islands.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), with guidance from NWS, will continue to monitor and provide updates to the community as needed.
