Federal COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Available; Local Bereavement Recipients Ineligible
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020. This is separate financial assistance from the government of Guam’s COVID-19 Bereavement Assistance of $10,000 offered through the Department of Administration. Any aid received from another source, such as Guam’s COVID-19 Bereavement Assistance, would be deducted from the FEMA funeral assistance award. Recipients of Guam’s COVID-19 Bereavement Assistance are not eligible for FEMA assistance since it exceeds the federal aid available of up to $9,000. Those who did not avail of local aid may apply for the FEMA COVID-19 funeral assistance.
Eligibility for federal funeral assistance is made available to those that meet the following conditions:
-
The death must have occurred in the United States, including the U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
-
The death certificate must indicate the death was attributed to or caused by COVID-19.
-
The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or a qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after January 20, 2020.
-
There is no requirement for the deceased person to have been a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien.
To apply for assistance, call FEMA’s COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Helpline at 1-844-684-6333 (TTY: 800-462-7585) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, Monday – Friday.
