The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continue to monitor a tropical disturbance in eastern Micronesia, near Chuuk. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on this disturbance, Invest Area 95W.
The system is expected to move westward, passing well south of Guam by Tuesday, and passing near Yap by Wednesday or Thursday. At this time, the disturbance poses no direct threat to Guam or the CNMI.
The following advisories remain in effect:
A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until noon today. For north and west facing reefs, hazardous surf between 7 to 9 feet is expected to remain hazardous until noon. For east facing reefs, surf is high enough at 8 to 10 feet, to generate a high rip current risk.
A high risk of rip currents is in effect through Wednesday afternoon. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. If caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm and stay afloat while waiting for help. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Rip currents are life threatening.
A small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until midnight Tuesday night. Combined seas of 8 to 10 feet will persist through Tuesday evening. Seas of 10 feet or higher will produce hazardous conditions to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise the community to avoid hazardous seas, until conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
