JIC RELEASE NO. 376 - 51st COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported; Cumulative Results: 82 Test Positive for COVID-19; One GDOE Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19

The Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 51st COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) at approximately 4:55 p.m. The patient was a 90-year-old female with underlying health conditions that were compounded by COVID-19. She was pronounced dead on arrival at GMH and was a known positive case.

"It doesn't get any easier announcing the passing of one of our own to COVID-19. And it shouldn't. These are our people, and for many, they died alone without the comfort of family beside them. Jeff, Lt. Governor Josh, and I send our deepest condolences and sympathies to her family and friends," said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. "This virus is unrelenting and it doesn't discriminate. None of us are safe from its grasp. This is why it is so important to remain vigilant and to do whatever is necessary to keep each other safe."

The Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center (GBHWC) has a Crisis Hotline that is available 24/7 at (671) 647-8833/4. For those feeling anxious, stressed, overwhelmed or are needing to talk to someone, GBHWC has experienced providers available and ready to assist the community with any heightened stress and anxiety experienced as a result of COVID-19.

One GDOE Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19

On Saturday, October 3, 2020, the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) confirmed that one additional GDOE employee tested positive for COVID-19. The confirmed case was identified at P.C. Lujan Elementary School and was identified through contact tracing efforts.

The GDOE is working closely with DPHSS to conduct contact tracing and any close contacts of the confirmed case will be contacted directly by DPHSS. A close contact is an individual who has come in face-to-face contact with a confirmed COVID-19 individual for at least 10 minutes or more and within six feet, or who has had direct contact with infectious secretions of the confirmed COVID-19 individual (e.g. being coughed on).

Areas of the campus will be identified for cleaning and disinfecting as needed. Employees will not have access to these areas until cleaning has been completed. Hard copy packet and food distribution will continue uninterrupted.
