New Case Definition Changes how Probable Cases are Classified
On August 5, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) approved a new case definition for COVID-19 which was adopted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To classify as a probable case, the following criteria must be met:

  • Meets clinical criteria AND epidemiologic linkage with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for SARS-CoV-2.
  • Meets presumptive laboratory evidence.
  • Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory evidence for SARS-CoV-2.

From March 12 to September 2, Guam reported eight probable cases under the previous case definition: six who were clinically diagnosed without confirmatory laboratory evidence and two who tested positive through antibody testing. On September 3, DPHSS adopted the new CDC case definition for COVID-19 and reclassified Guam COVID-19 cases. Under the new case definition, Guam has no cases that classify as probable cases. The Guam COVID-19 Case Count has been adjusted to reflect the adoption of the new case definition: as of September 3, Guam's COVID-19 Case Count is 1,560 confirmed cases and 0 probable cases.

To date, there have been a total of 1,560 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 13 deaths, 716 not in isolation, and 831 cases in active isolation. Of those cases, 1,334 are classified as civilians and 226 are military service members.
