Hazardous Surf Expected through this Morning; Inexperienced Swimmers Should Remain Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has extended the following advisories:

A high surf advisory has been extended for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 11 a.m. this morning. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected for west facing reefs of the Marianas.

A high risk of rip currents has been extended for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 11 a.m. this morning. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Large breaking waves can knock people down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents can drag people out to sea.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid hazardous surf, especially west facing reefs and beaches. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
