Hazardous Surf and Seas Expected; Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

Life-threatening swimming conditions can be expected.

A high surf warning is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 2 p.m. this afternoon along north and west facing reefs. Dangerously large breaking waves of 11 to 16 feet are expected in the surf zone. Breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks, and into dangerous seas.

A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from 2 p.m. this afternoon until 6 p.m. Saturday along north and west facing reefs. Large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected in the surf zone.

A high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Saturday afternoon along north, west, and east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. Saturday. East winds of 15 to 25 knots and seas up to 14 feet are expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid hazardous seas and dangerous rip currents. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water while the advisories are in effect.
