Governor approves RUTEX off base; no live-fire training included

Governor Eddie Calvo, after reassurances from Joint Region Marianas Commander, Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, has agreed to the Realistic Urban Training Exercise (RUTEX), though it will not include the use of Small Arms Marking System rounds during off-base training.

This year, there will be scheduled training on military installations on Guam, as well as training in the Tanguisson area, which will not include the use of live-fire rounds.

The administration recognizes the importance of the RUTEX military exercise for the readiness of the Marines and civilian law enforcement. Further, Governor Calvo said the safety of the civilian community is paramount.

George Charfauros, Homeland Security Advisor, said Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense will continue to work with DoD, federal, and local participants to coordinate this annual joint exercise.
