GHS/OCD Promote Lightning Safety Awareness Week 2018

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam, are celebrating June 24 –  30, 2018 as Lightning Safety Awareness Week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) in conjunction with several states and territories, declare National Lightning Safety Awareness Week for their respective areas to educate and raise awareness about the hazards of lightning in order to lower the number of casualties and injuries caused by lightning strikes.

Throughout the week of June 24 - 30, residents and visitors are encouraged to prepare for lightning disasters by creating a lightning safety plan, check weather forecasts daily and know when to cancel or postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms develop.

The following are basic safety tips for thunderstorm and lightning preparedness:

·         If a thunderstorm warning is issued, find shelter right away, following the national theme: “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

·         Move from outdoors into a building or car

·         Pay close attention to alerts and warnings

·         Unplug appliances

·         Avoid using land lines

Use Lightning Safety Awareness Week as a chance to open discussions with friends and family about thunderstorm and lightning preparedness by using the following resources:
