GHS/OCD Host Contests for National Preparedness Month

Throughout the month of September, Guam will join the nation in celebrating National Preparedness Month (NPM) and promoting the importance of planning and preparing for man-made and natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. This year’s NPM theme is, “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.”

The Offices of Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) will host contests throughout NPM and encourage the school communities to participate:

Elementary School Poster Contest

WHO MAY JOIN - Any elementary school student enrolled in any Guam based school.
Categories:
1) K-5 and 1st Grade
2) 2nd and 3rd Grade
3) 4th and 5th Grade
 
POSTER SPECIFICATIONS

· HARD COPY ENTRIES: Overall dimensions shall be no smaller than Legal Size (8.5’’ x 14’’) and no larger than Tabloid (11’’x17’’) on paper, poster or illustration board.
· DIGITAL COPY ENTRIES: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, pdf, Photoshop, or Illustrator and flattened to a PNG file. Email submissions may be properly labeled photographed posters.
· Stenciled, traced, computer generated or commercially manufactured stick-on lettering or graphics are prohibited.
· Posters must incorporate the theme of “What does your emergency plan look like?”
Posters should have special emphasis on how you and your family can prepare for a disaster (i.e. What do you do before a disaster, how do you communicate before and during a disaster, etc.)
Parents/guardians are encouraged to visit ready.gov (http://www.ready.gov/make-a- plan) for some contributing ideas.
Parents/guardians should not complete the poster board for the children, rather, help them formulate ideas.
Posters will be judged on originality, the focus on the emergency preparedness theme, and the creativity of the poster.
 
IDENTIFICATION - All entries must include the following information: Name, Age, Grade, School, and Title of Poster (properly label entries upon email submission).
 
DEADLINE - Entries are to be dropped off to the Guam Homeland Security Office in Agana Heights or emailed to maria.romulo@ghs.guam.gov no later than 5pm, Friday, September 25, 2020. Any entry submitted after this day will not be considered eligible.
 

 

Middle School Poetry Contest


WHO MAY JOIN - Any middle school student enrolled in any Guam based school.
 
CONTEST GUIDELINES AND SPECIFICATIONS

· Design a wearable face mask that illustrates disaster preparedness tips.
· Take pictures of yourself wearing the mask and email it to your teacher.
Front, back, left, and right side views
· Formatting:
Pictures must be sent as 8.5 x 11 Microsoft Documents
Masks need not be handmade, but can be a solid color with designs added.
· Judging Criteria:
Innovation and creativity
Illustration of disaster preparedness messaging (Students, parents, guardians, and teachers are encouraged to visit http://www.ready.gov or www.ghs.guam.gov for some contributing ideas
Use in public setting requirement (i.e. must cover the nose and mouth, no valve, have a filter pocket, etc.) 
· Rules:
No vulgar/derogatory language, symbols, or copyrighted material  
Photos must be taken of the students wearing the mask. 
All masks must be designed entirely from the student. 
Masks may be 3Dimensional and must be able to fit a box that is 12''x12''x12'' in size.

High School Video Contest


WHO MAY JOIN - Any high school student enrolled in any Guam based school.

CONTEST GUIDELINES SPECIFICATIONS

· Create a digital Disaster Preparedness Poster, incorporating "What if someone is sick (Chicken Pox, COVID-19, etc.) in your household?"
· Students can be grouped into three people max.
· Posters must be 1.5' x 3' feet. 
· Copyrighted fonts and images are prohibited. Students can use stock photos. 
· Posters must be in digital format (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, pdf, Photoshop, or Illustrator) and flattened to a PNG file. 
· Posters will be judged on originality of images / characters, overall design, and content
· Fonts must be no less than 14 in size and wordings must be legible to read 2 feet away from the poster. 
· Students must include the following information on the poster: 
What to do before, during, after a typhoon 
What to include in your disaster kit 
What to include in your emergency plan
What to do if you have pets?
What to do when your power goes out?
What to do when you evacuate?
Indoor / Outdoor preparations
Post Typhoon preparations 
 
IDENTIFICATION - All entries must include the following information: Name(s), Age(s), Grade(s), School, and Title of Poster (properly label entries upon email submission).
 
DEADLINE - Entries are to be dropped off to the Guam Homeland Security Office in Agana Heights or emailed to maria.romulo@ghs.guam.gov no later than 5pm, Wednesday, September 16, 2020. Any entry submitted after this day will not be considered eligible.
 
 
WINNERS- 1st and 2nd place winners from each category will be recognized and presented prizes at the end of National Preparedness Month. Schools and teachers of the winners will be contacted.
 
All entries will become property of Guam homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense and may appear in future public outreach publications.
